Abstract

Space, Time and Architecture constitutes an historical compilation that identifies certain tenets of modern architecture. The book aims to shed light for those trying to make sense of the apparent chaos of conflicting tendencies that present themselves in contemporary architecture. Giedion emphasizes that despite the confusion in that time, which shows weak evidence of a true consensus, there is a hidden summary of our existing civilization. The author focuses on the movement to develop new traditions in architecture and establishing mutual relationships between human activities and the similarity of methods used, both in architecture and construction, painting, planning and science. Giedion’s theory of an evolutionary, which is conditioned by the cultural and economic situation of the time. Sigfried takes the times as central to their theories, however states that history is not a compilation of facts, but an insight into a living process you go through.
