Modern architectural expressionism in Guatemala
Keywords:
modern architecture, expressionis architecture, Benjamín Cañas, Efraín RecinosAbstract
This article aims to make visible and especially value the most interesting architectural works made in Guatemala City within the expressionist aspect of Modern architecture. As they are the set of the Monument to the Industry and the complex of the Cultural Center of Efrain Recinos and the two sanctuaries of Benjamín Cañas, in addition to other related works such as the structural-expressionism of the rectory of the University Campus, the former Air Terminal of La Aurora or the gymnasium of Don Bosco. All made between the decades of the sixties and seventies. With the aim of contributing to a better appreciation of these works, which have remained somewhat marginalized by their frankly plastic nature and of undoubted artistic-original qualities in open contradiction with the prevailing architecture of their time, such as Brutalism, the International Style and specially against the Functionalism.
