Abstract

The monumental architecture of the historic
center of Quetzaltenango, undoubtedly possesses an artistic and historical value as well as being a source of regional identity, but it has been generally considered made up of Neoclassical monuments. In the light of the characteristics of classical architecture achievements established by the famous German art historian J. J. Winckelmann in this article it is established which buildings of this city show actual Neoclassical features. Then the article describes the architectural features of each one of these five monumental buildings and their common features, the chronological
data, authorship and the circumstances of its creation. Finally, his relationship with the dictatorial power of the early twentieth century in Guatemala.

Carlos Ayala Rosales, realizo estudios en arquitectura y luego en historia en la Universidad de San Carlos de Guatemala (USCG) posteriormente en la Universidad nacional autónoma de México (UNAM) realizó la maestría en ismo en la Ciudad de México. Es investigador titular de la DIFA y profesor de varios cursos de historia del ismo en el posgrado y en la licenciatura de la Facultad. Posee varias investigaciones, algunas publicadas, sobre la historia de la arquitectura y del ismo de Guatemala.
