From its origins, the production of documents through diverse disciplines has evolved from original works, on the hands of illustrators and engravers, to the first incunabula that expanded the frontiers of science making possible the reproduction of documents, fostering a growing necessity for referencing works, which, today can be in a digital format and whose evolution has reached architects and students of architecture that now have to become writers as part of contemporary exigencies. In this scenario, Reference systems
support the production process of scientific
documents. The study focuses on the origins of reference systems from antiquity to the present; the different existing types, as well as the advantages and disadvantages of their utilization for the documentation of the different sources of information, and avoid plagiarism in architectural studies.
