The need to effectively prepare students who want to pursue higher studies has been a concern of the Guatemalan public university. One of the most far-reaching experiments was carried out during the 1960s when basic studies were pursued in a common area to prepare students before entering their respective careers. But, more than half a century after the School of General Studies closed, the need to improve the preparation to enter the university remains latent. The situation generated by COVID19 highlighted the opportunity to use other educational tools through distance education. These 21st century resources allowed the development of university careers to continue, but also demonstrated that there are other options to strengthen the preparation of future university students. But, as it is observed in the article, to promote projects of this type, there are different variables to consider. That is why, in this work, the review of some particularities of this historic project is shared, which includes a brief review since its approval, its implementation and its subsequent disappearance.
