Abstract

The essay develops the theme of the hospital architecture of the modern movement in Guatemala in two parts. The first one, develops a critical analysis on the modern hospital architectural background, from hygiene and several of its protagonists, as well as its influence from 1871 to 1944. The second part, shows a descriptive analytical interpretation from 1944 to 1980, of the interactions that took place between the conceptual background and several architects who participated in the design and / or construction of representative buildings of the time. The article concludes, with a reflection on the essential character of the hospital space, based on the hygienic
interaction of architecture and medicine in one hundred years of history.

Alexander Aguilar (1970), arquitecto guatemalteco graduado de la Facultad de Arquitectura Universidad de San Carlos FARUSAC (1995). Maestría con lode en Arquitectura para la Salud, Planificación, Gestión y Desarrollo de Proyectos Hospitalarios, Universidad La Sapienza de Roma (2009). Estudios de doctorado en arquitectura hospitalaria, FARUSAC (2019). Profesor titular en FARUSAC de 2004 a la fecha. Participación internacional en AADAIH Argentina, ISTHMUS Panamá, Universidad Católica de Chile, La Sapienza de Roma, Italia. Miembro de la Red Internacional de Contactos Académicos, Sapienza de Roma, Italia. Ha escrito artículos para la revista Avance; Universidad La Sapienza; anuarios de IFHE Digest 2018 y AADAIH, entre otros.

Luis Kohön, arquitecto (2000) graduado en la Universidad de San Carlos de Guatemala con una Maestría en Diseño Arquitectónico y una en Planificación, Gestión y Desarrollo de Proyectos Hospitalarios de la Universidad La Sapienza de Roma (2009). Profesor de la Facultad de Arquitectura de la Universidad de San Carlos. Experto en arquitectura para la salud del Ministerio de Salud Pública y Asistencia Social de Guatemala.
