The essay develops the theme of the hospital architecture of the modern movement in Guatemala in two parts. The first one, develops a critical analysis on the modern hospital architectural background, from hygiene and several of its protagonists, as well as its influence from 1871 to 1944. The second part, shows a descriptive analytical interpretation from 1944 to 1980, of the interactions that took place between the conceptual background and several architects who participated in the design and / or construction of representative buildings of the time. The article concludes, with a reflection on the essential character of the hospital space, based on the hygienic
interaction of architecture and medicine in one hundred years of history.
