Abstract

From a historiographical description of
hygiene, sanitation and cleanliness as
generators of hospital architectural design
criteria, are compared in a critical analysis,
two states of art emphasizing the ventilation as one of the main criteria for hospital design. One is XIX century Spanish
approach and the other one the is the XXI
century American approach. The aim is to
understand that hospital cleanliness today,
like in the past, is an essential concept
which directly affects the functional and
technological design in hospital architecture
and therefore an architect needs to
understand its relevance to analyze ancient
