During the first 20 years of the 21st. century, Guatemala City experienced a significant urban transformation never experienced before. This transformation has been characterized by different phenomenons and events such as the exponential urban sprawl and population increase, the implementation of different urban planning strategies and the realization of different major urban projects that have changed the urban, social, and environmental dynamics of the city. In this context, 4 Grados Norte stands out for being the first project to be executed in the present century, becoming an important precedent for future urban plans and projects. Based on this sort of ideas, this article presents a case study in which its authors take an approach based on the 3 primary elements of sustainability (environmental, social, and economic) in
order to reflect on the learned lessons and best practices that can be applied in future
urban projects in Guatemala City.
