Urban Historicity Of The Plaza Mayor De La Constitucion Of Guatemala City

Abstract

The year 2021 inevitably brings a cycle of commemorations inherent to the Guatemalan sense of identity. The most notable event is, without a doubt, the bicentennial of the political emancipation of the Central American territory, which until then constituted the Captaincy General of Guatemala. The article develops a historical analysis at the urban level of La Plaza Mayor de la Constitución in Guatemala City in different settings. The first is made up of its ecclesiastical influence and corresponding architectural antecedents from the period between 1776 and 1893. The second scenario dates from 1893 to 1917, reflecting a cultural interpretation of the interactions between political antecedents and architectural concepts. The third statement includes between the year 1917 to the year 1939, where a new architectural period is reborn through an urban restoration, which is complemented by a diversity of buildings that would characterize a change of political transition and needs caused after the earthquake of 1917, moving to the last scenario that analyzes the current urban characteristics and the validation of citizens as a place of social interaction called to be the starting point of a new urban life.
