Tool for risk management in archaeological sites

Abstract

The purpose was to disseminate the methodology to develop risk management plans in parks and archaeological sites, which was developed and applied in a pilot form in the Quiriguá Archaeological Park during 2013 and 2014. The initiative came from the Vice Ministry of Cultural and Natural Heritage of the Ministry of Culture and Sports of Guatemala and counted on the financial support of the World Monument Fund, with which, two publications were generated: "Climate risk methodology for archeological sites and parks" and "Risk management plan- an adaptation to the impact of climate change on the Quiriguá Archaeological Park". The methodology was designed to reduce the vulnerability of archaeological sites and parks, facing the
negative effects of climate change. The approach was multi-threat and applied through a participatory process, in two stages: 1) Risk Analysis, doing analysis of threats, vulnerability analysis and risk prioritization; and 2) Formulation of the Risk Management Plan, analyzing the feasibility of the measures and programming and evaluation of the Plan.
